TransAct Signs Definitive Development Agreement with HP on New Inkjet Printer Solution

WALLINGFORD, CT (March 8) BUSINESS WIRE -March 8, 1999--TransAct Technologies (NASDAQ: TACT) said today that it has signed a definitive agreement with Hewlett-Packard Company (NYSE: HWP) under which the two companies will jointly work to develop thermal inkjet printers for point-of-sale (POS) applications. The agreement enables the companies to set timeframes, schedules, research and development, and acquire personnel to achieve the introduction in early 2000 of the first of a family of thermal inkjet products for the POS market.

The POS printer market, estimated at $800 million-$1 billion worldwide, is one of the largest transaction-based printing markets served by TransAct. The introduction of ink-jet technology to TransAct's product portfolio will allow the Company to offer printers to all segments of the market.

HP, a world leader in inkjet technology, will provide its expertise for the print-cartridge design and ink composition, while TransAct will provide the printer components, including the printer mechanism and firmware. Initially, the products will be sold through TransAct's sales and distribution channels under the ITHACA(R) brand name, with marketing support from HP.

"We are proud to have cemented our relationship with a partner of HP's global stature," Bart Shuldman, President and Chief Executive Officer of TransAct, noted. "We are confident that we can introduce a breakthrough product, one that we believe will substantially benefit our POS customers worldwide."

According to Douglas R. Watson, general manager of HP's Specialty Printing Systems Operation, "We're delighted to formalize our relationship with TransAct and to establish a timetable for our collaboration. The TransAct team, led by Bart Shuldman, has proven expertise in the POS market and in designing, manufacturing and marketing POS printers. We are very pleased to be part of this effort to bring the advantages of inkjet technology to TransAct's customers."

TransAct designs, develops, manufactures and markets transaction-based printers and related products under the ITHACA(R) and MAGNETEC(R) brand names. The Company's printers are used to provide transaction records such as receipts, tickets, coupons, register journals and other documents. TransAct serves four vertical markets: point of sale, gaming and lottery, kiosk and financial services. The Company sells its products directly to end users, original equipment manufacturers, value-added resellers and selected distributors. Please visit TransAct's website located at transact-tech.com to receive more information about the Company's products and selected financial data. The Company's forward-looking statements in this release are subject to a number of risks and uncertainties that could cause actual results to differ materially. Risks and uncertainties include, but are not limited to, customer acceptance and market share gains, both domestically and internationally, in the face of substantial competition from competitors that have broader lines of products; successful product development; dependence on significant customers; economic conditions in the United States, Europe and Latin America; marketplace acceptance of new products; risks associated with foreign operations; availability of third-party components at reasonable prices; and the absence of price wars or other significant pricing pressures affecting the Company's products in the United States or abroad.
