Telecom...In 1998, there are three great mergings in telecom industry:
1) SBC and AIT
2) T and TCOMA
3) BEL and GTE
This is partially due to the Telecommunications Reform act of 1996,
with its goals to increase competition among phone companies, cable
firms and satellite TV operators. Telecom companies are pulling their
resources to expand into new services and regions. There is an analysis by MERRILL and CIBC
Oppenheimer suggesting that there are further merging going in 1999. Here is a list of potentials:

Buyer=========================Target================Reason
Regional Bell or
Foreign firm=======================Sprint================Fiber-optic
=========================================================network

Bell South=========================Sprint,QWST,IXC=======fiber-optic
=========================================================network

Worldcom===========================US WEST===============expansion to
=========================================================local
=========================================================market
AT&T, Sprint,=========================================================
WORLDCOM,===========================Windstar=============local markets

AT&T, Sprint,
Worldcom============================Teligent=============wireless
=========================================================links in
=========================================================local markets

How do we play this ?? I would put the target companies on a list
to watch for some unusual volume as well as the increase of volume
and open interest of the CALL option. Currently the immediate target
is WCII...
