John, there are about twelve groups working on cold fusion and quite feverishly, including some Japanese groups supported by MITI. If these people succeed within the next ten years I would say that by 2020 the whole energy production and storage landscape would be quite different. Be very "futuristic" and you can see a portable PC operating on a yearly charge of 10 cc of deutrium (VBG).

solar energy was part of alternate energy research during the oil embargo crisis (1970's) at many oil companies. Recently an amorphous silicon ribbon has been reported to have better efficiency than the conventional ones. BP (and ARCO?), Siemens, etc. are involved with conventional photovoltaics. Fuel cell is an attractive area now.

In estimating the area of a solar cell panel, one needs to consider the time of exposure = (energy required)/(conversion efficiency)(time of exposure to sunlight) for that day of panel's position relative to the sun's, etc. etc. Battery stores energy from the panel and releases during night. Conventional solar panels have found many applications in the Asian farming community, but not as much in North America.

I am told that some Costco wholesale stores provide battery charging facility for electric cars in California. Ram
