Glenn,

The issue boils down to this. Even the strongest supporters of amzn eventually admit it loses money on current operations. Their optimism comes from the expectation that amzn will use their knowledge of their customers and experience in acquiring and retaining them to find something in the future that can be sold to those individual customers at a profit.

For instance, they know that Michelle will buy books from Amazon, even if they cost $10 more per book than Shopping.com. They will know that another person will buy insurance from them even if it costs $100/year more than AllState. They know that So and So can be swayed to buy with a $5 certificate, but it takes $10 for someone else, and just a friendly e-mail for a third person.

Either you believe the dream, or you don't. Some go further, they believe in it and they buy the stock.
