Scott,

Re: "Sorry to have to report these things ..."

Very informative post, Scott ... Many of the issues you described go
back to the IC process performance and test/reliability methodology
used to "guardband" the CPU's. Obviously, Cyrix has reduced their
margins so that their customers see many more problems than Intel or
even AMD customers. This just reflects the fact that Cyrix doesn't
have access to a "state of the art" IC process that can achieve the
proper speed/performance without reducing the "guardbanding". You're
exactly right Scott ... Why choose Cyrix for $15 savings ??

Make It So,

Scott, I'm sorry to hear of your poor experiences. Mine have been just the opposite and pretty much trouble free. I'm sure companies like Compaq and IBM put the MX/MII design through much more rigorous testing than all the do-it-yourselfers in the world combined and concluded that the chip was suitable for shipping in their systems.

I do agree that the cost/performance advantage Cyrix chips once offered has evaporated to nil. This is evidenced in the lack of systems you can buy at retail. The MXi has a chance of rectifying this, but it better start shipping pronto.

Bob

Scott,
The only problem I've had with a Cyrix system is sometimes the system freezes after exiting the internet/Netscape Navigator (win 95b). Frozen mouse. I have to reboot. Any ideas what's happening?
The intel systems I have freeze more often but I can't totally blame it on the chip.

Jim

Scott, re the bad MII-300. Why immediately blame Cyrix testing for the bad chip? Which vendor was it purchased from? How do you know that it wasn't mishandled by the reseller and/or a customer who returned it after trying to overclock it, etc?

Also, I know saving $15 doesn't sound like much, but I work for a co that sells chips to the disk drive industry, and these guys beat on us to shave pennies!! off prices. The OEM's in turn beat on them to shave a few dollars off their prices.

I know NSM needs to move along the speed curve, but if they can make money selling $40-$60 chips, then they may still have a future. Remember that AMD seems to need an ASP of about $100 just to break even.
