I understand what you are saying here. Playing the shorter term in some senses more risky. It does require a very different approach to the market that many simply are not able to execute well. Heck, on my first short term trade that I made a while ago, I lost $20,000. This is after a successful history of %35 returns in the market as a long term trader. But still this trade was invaluable in waking me up. I consider it my "tuition" to the college of the Marketplace.

I find the current market not very suitable to long term investors unless the are investing for a period of several years or more in the market. This is what had me as an investor of 6 to 9 months duration turn to the shorter term. But this requires allot of time and effort on my part. The long term sometimes does look attractive to me.
