Travel writing is really a sideline for me; it is very competitive and you do not earn a lot at it, except at the most rarefied levels, if you already have a name and probably don't need to earn a lot at it. I like to travel and I like some of the fringe adventure sports; writing about them covers the costs on my own adventures and brings me into contact with other fetishists. There are also certain little perks, free hotel rooms, etc., which come in useful once people in the business know you are associated with publications they respect. The problem is that because everybody wants to do it, many publications treat contributors as if they were expendable, which in fact they are - you can always find somebody who wants to travel and write about it.
