RESEARCH ALERT - PaineWebber starts wireless firms

NEW YORK, March 9 (Reuters) - Wall Street brokerage PaineWebber Inc. said Tuesday it had begun coverage of five wireless companies, including Sprint PCS Corp. <PCS.N>.

It said in a research note it had given Sprint and Western Wireless Corp. <WWCA.O> buy ratings.

It said it had initiated Aerial Communications Inc. <AERL.O>, Powertel Corp. <PTEL.O>, and Omnipoint Corp. <OMPT.O> with neutral ratings.

It did not provide further details.

In morning trade, Sprint PCS was up 5/8 at 34-7/8, Western rose 1/16 at 26-1/16, Aerial gained 7/16 at 6-3/8, Powertel stayed at 14-1/8, and Omnipoint slipped 3/16 at 9-7/
