Yes, I do remember Alantec very well. Had you been with Alantec long when the acquisition took place?

Fore did not understand the strength of ethernet market, and was pushing ATM to the desktop. Once they realized that it was a mistake...

Thank you for pointing that out, again. So many people believe that ATM is merely a magic acronym that solves all network communications issues.

To its credit though, FORE seems to have gotten a little sense, and developed a good set of carrier class products. Unfortunately they don't seem to realize that they've likely fallen too far behind the pack to become a viable "full-service" vendor, and their acquisitions of late are probably only adding unwanted baggage that potential acquirers will neither want nor need.

I think Steve Kim of Xylan once believed that with good technology and perseverance, he could adequately compete against the networking giants. Obviously he's realized that survival as an independent entity might not be assured, and that Xylan could make a worthwhile contribution as part of a larger concern.

FORE Sale - Networking company. Original owner. Low miles. Stored in garage since 1996. Millions spent on accessories and extras. Needs ground up restoration, but can be driven. Must sell due to illness. $40 a share or best offer.

The internally developed switched ( that was canceled ) was in an advanced stage and the cost of developing it was probably less than 1/200 of what FORE spent on Berkeley...
But if the internal project would have been finished, some guys would not have made money out of the acquisition...
