Linux---all hype in my opinion.
Microsoft has just has a lot of power. Microsoft is in the process of making as many of its applications the industry standards. If these are not available on Linux, it sure cuts down on the potential for this new O/S.
Intel is probably better off realigning itself with Microsoft a bit more---to maintain this "wintel" monopoly. A think MSFT has been giving them a hard time (evidence in DOJ case) in the past but who knows MSFT may ease up on their aggressiveness after what has been happening. They have a common goal of maintaining Wintel.

Just my thoughts

Chia - Re: " That's why INTC is promoting Linux. "

I think you are essentially correct.

Intel is backing Linux in an effort to provide viable, robust operating system platforms for its workstation and server business.

As you noted, Microsoft has been Absent in providing good software to take advantage of Intel's newer hardware.

They completely BLEW their Chromeffects project.

In many, many ways, Intel's and Microsoft's priorities are diverging.

Intel is finally taking a pro-active stance to help itself.
