Re: Cable Modems and CD-music

Would you say then that cable modems place streaming media at a relative disadvantage compared to standard multimedia compression formats, such as MP3 or Quicktime, because of these server delivery limitations you referred to?"

Sam Citron,
MP3 is a very new compression format that makes, for the first time, CD quality audio available over the Internet. The streaming media formats (like RealMedia) are a joke even with the cable modem. Streaming even 30kbps audio(with a 3meg connection) is plain terrible with a cable modem. The quality issue has not been solved using streaming media. Probably for the same reason, VoIP is not ready for prime time.

BUT, sending compressed CD quality MP3 files does work extremely well with a cable modem. From what I understand, for dial-up analog too. I still believe it will turn the music industry upside down, but I don't know how to invest in it?

If you have Internet Explorer, hit the MP3.com site and download a clip or two. It will take you a lot longer, but it's worth the experience to check it out. IE will automatically download and setup MSFT's media player if you don't have it. Using that you can play the clips.

Even though it's slightly off topic to this thread, I'd appreciate any feedback. I'm just looking for some general investment ideas from the followers of this thread. DIMD is a play, but it's not exactly pure. But that may be irrelevant because DIMD has taken such a hit on it's stock price.
Thanks,
MikeM(From Florida)
