Jeff:

It is a mess. My contacts are becoming very despondent. Lay-offs are a way of life. The government is caught between a rock and a hard place in that they cannot continue to just borrow from bankrupt banks and pretend that nothing is wrong as the unsold inventories pile up to the ceilings. At the same time, the government is quite legitimately worried about the unemployed becoming an army with a cause.

The government appears to be trying to "streamline" through plant closings and some privatization, but they cannot go too quickly for fear of the riled up masses.

Incidentally the "Army" over there is an enormous owner of a great deal of the infrastructure.

Best, Earlie
