I start out bringing a tow rope along. Does the motor have oil injection? Most of the newer ones do. If the boat has one and it has a history of not working, I'd premix the gas and undo the oil injector. Saves you buying him a new motor. Doesn't hurt to put a new fuel line on every couple of years. Get an appointment at a marina that handles that type of motor and have it checked out. Called cheap insurance.
