The Feds & Microsoft.... >>In my opinion if Novell embraces Digital Me along the lines I have suggested, with an id vault and verification separated from vendors and OS's, they capture the high ground immediately. This approach will get plenty of endorsements including political ones.>> Nice to see the world begin to wake up about Novell. Had a great trip to - skiing and visiting a few companies I've been working with, including my first cup of coffee with Novell - a recent direct addition which I hope can evolve in specific areas relating to our business model and plans for the securities industry. One troubling side note had me talking with an extremely capable guy who works for - what he claims is - the most technologically advanced local police dept in the US. He went on to tell me that they are developing the nation's first automated system which I will try to summarize: wireless-to-laptop-to-national-mainframedatabaseof-criminals-private-personalinfo, etc. From what I can gather, this is ALL being funded in large part by the Federal Govt. I am sure the FBI is involved. He went on to say that there are 1-2 fulltime Microsoft employees stationed locally in his area working FULLTIME on this initiative. There are plans to roll out this system to police depts across the nation once finished. Despite the MSFT trial, I've always suspected that Microsoft is working very closely with the Federal government in many other areas that could advance and close the loop on internet/LAN security intelligence of companies, individuals, etc. It will be very interesting to see how Novell and NDS layers into any future work in these areas going forward. NDS-supported products and services - including Digital Me - have the potential to make the dream of Objects - which flashed in a lot of pans in the early 90's - really come alive. For objects to come alive in this exploding internet space, they need traffic cops. NDS-supported apps can become the intelligent traffic cops of this Wave 2 which is right at hand. Lets let the people - not the government - decide how these electronic intelligent "cops" get placed inside this bandwidth to factor personal & product info in this exploding world of Internet Wave 2 . The news last weekend (which I still have to dig into) had Microsolf placing security registration codes/tags inside windows and windows apps. This was something that WAS NOT disclosed to win98 users. Does this mean that Microsoft has developed a way of tracking docuement and other files we freely send across the net? Was this - is this - the beginning of BIG BROTHER? We must keep in mind that the internet abhors mass, monopolies, arrogance, power, etc. Microsoft AND government are at risk right now for they are trapped in the paradigm of power and control. I would not surprise me if the time both Bills spent on the golf course together worked in some underlying motive or plan to move in this direction. I am eager for Novell to shine its technology right into the mind, heart and soul of every individual who spends time on the internet. I want the privacy and freedom of my physical world to be layered into my virtual world. I do not trust the government and I do not trust Gates. Novell's bright future will be defined by their ability to focus - laser-like - on the power of one thing - THE INDIVIDUAL. It's time for Novell to come out and meet THE INDIVIDUAL - give all of us a giant handshake of technology which can enable us to securely weave our energy and trust into growing these new individually-based virtual domains on the net. All this power, strategy, mystery and the paranoid ideas that get mixed in between seem to mirror the past historic battles individuals have made when their FREEDOMS were threatened. One individual over the past two days said "this is the revolutionary war all over again". The more I pondered that thought, the more I tend to agree. Are goverments and mightly technology interests going to collude to "cap the net" or will individuals finally get it, take responsibility power and action and "rock the net"? Forgive me for soapboxing. GO!
