Good for them. Small area...Controlled test...Looks promising. A little early for some people to declare victory and pronounce the problem solved.

We are going to be seeing a lot of this Toronto/Ontario Hydro kind of thing come April. What it really means...who knows?

What I do know is I woke up this moring to an above the fold headline in the Journal Sentinel (Millwaukee www.jsonline.com) "Power outlook is dim: Fragile system may mean energy shortages again this summer." Though I do not live in Millwaukee, the area in the study encompasses my power area. This story is not untypical of the ones I read while living in Central Illinois last year. In fact a good portion of the Mid West has been experience power difficulties. Feeding Chicago's insatiable demand is part of the problem. (Chicagoland is about 40% dependent on nuclear power--Oh crap.)

My favorite quote from the aritcle is from Mark Williamson, senior vice president of Madison Gas and Electric Co. who said, "We are very concerned that this summer is going to be a repeat of the last two because there has not been any substantial infrastructure built. If you have a string of really hot days this summer, I could see rotating blackout scenarios." Can't wait. I may get a chance to put the y2k backup home light and cooking system into operation early this year.

The article is very good read even for those not in Wisconsin because it explains how the forces or arbitrage and impending deregulation have changed the focus of electric utilities from that of reliability to that of capitalizing on the margins. (eh, jwk?)
