Midas,

"Mr. Charters will have to provide you with the references himself (if he can) because searching the various names he suggested for papers on Ni-bearing VMS deposits proved useless."

I think we all knew that;-)

Thanks for the leg work, I will do some tomorrow afternoon. Maybe add a reference page to my site or something so I don't clutter up this thread.

P.S. A few good reads are:

Barnes, et al. 1997: Ni, Cu, Au, and platinum-group element contents of sulfides associated with intraplate magmatism: a synthesis in CJES, 34, p. 337-351

Ebel and Naldrett 1997: Crystallization of sulfide liquids and the interpretation of ore composition, same issue 352-365.

Try Hutchinson for papers on VMS and sedimentary nickel. Prof at U of Ottawa originally.

Naldrett thinks that NiS came out of solution when ultramafic magma carrying nickel picked up silica in the Sudbury event. Well there is no evidence that unltramafic magmas had any nickel. The sublayer does have nickel, but to give it to the ore it would mean that it would have had to be leached out of the sublayer and redeposited. And how did it get mixed in with the norite in a disseminated fashion then?
