When I was up in the tribal country there was a huge flap over an indigenous hunting method. They go up on the ridges on cloudy, moonless nights in autumn and put out lights; migratory birds fly over the ridges, are drawn to the lights, and are caught in large nets. The liberal/environmental community, which has long made vigorous professions of opposition to any interference with tribal customs, has a tough time with this, as the birds are pretty and it is possible that some endangered species get snared (I don't think anyone would complain if they were killing snakes). It all got very silly; NGOs were having conferences to discuss what their "position" ought to be. The natives, of course, went right on doing it. Funny to see the PC types caught in a dilemma like that.

My own feeling is that the traditional hunting methods of indigenous communities qualify as natural predation. In any event, the birds aren't endangered because of a few Igorots up on the mountain with nets, they're endangered because of habitat destruction at the ends of the migration route. End of sermon.

There is also a delightful book about the Three Little Pigs from the wolf's point of view. He merely, for example, got an itch in his nose and sneezed and these shoddily built houses fell down and killed the pigs and what was he supposed to do, let good food lie there and go to waste? And so on.
