New North Sea Cable System Targets European Carriers, Internet Service Providers
$400 Million Submarine and Terrestrial Project to Link U.K., Netherlands, Germany, Denmark, Norway, Sweden and Finland

Project Headed by International Telecommunications Industry Veterans

Initial Funding by Group Headed by Dolphin Communications

HAMILTON, Bermuda, March 8 /PRNewswire/ -- A $400 million optical fiber submarine and terrestrial cable system to fill a void in voice, broadband data and Internet service transmission capacity for Northern Europe was announced here by Lawrence M. Codacovi, President and CEO, Pangea Ltd.

Countries to be linked by the system are the U.K., Netherlands, Germany, Denmark, Norway, Sweden and Finland.

Mr. Codacovi, who previously served as Senior Vice President, International Services for MCI WorldCom, said that the Pangea management team includes Stephen E. Lovas as Executive Vice President and Joseph Kapusinsky as Senior Vice President, Engineering and Operations. Mr. Lovas previously served as President of Pacific Telecom Cable, Inc., the U.S. partner in the privately funded North Pacific Cable project. Mr. Kapusinsky's more than 36 years of industry experience includes service at New York Telephone, AT&T and AT&T Submarine Systems, Inc.

Mr. Codacovi stated that a group of U.S.-based venture capital firms headed by Dolphin Communications Fund in New York has committed equity capital of $103 million toward the project. Other investors in the group are Columbia Capital, Harbourvest Partners and Norwest Venture Partners. He added that Pangea Ltd. is securing the balance of capital from a banking syndicate so that the $400 million project will be fully funded.

"Pangea 1 will serve as a 'one-stop-shop' for Northern European carriers and ISPs," Mr. Codacovi said. "It is a practical approach to a market region where no single network matches our footprint. Currently," he said, "carriers must acquire and manage individual network components in region to secure what Pangea will deliver as a single system."

According to Mr. Codacovi, site surveys for Pangea 1 are underway. The projected ready-for-service date is the 4th quarter of 2000.
