You say, "if it did not cost them anything," men would scatter their seed far and wide. I think some would, and some wouldn't.

I think there is a difference, which I can't explain, between men that philander and men who don't. I don't know what the statistics are, I know that Kinsey's are suspect, if you have good statistics I'd be interested. I think the number of men who commit adultery during marriage in the United States is less than 30%, possibly much less. The ones who do cheat are different than the ones who don't, in some way. It's not just opportunity, and it's not just sexual boredom.

I think nature favors human males who stick close to the mate and her young. We aren't like animals whose young can survive in the wild at birth. We are much more like our closest relatives, the great apes, which have interesting social structures which vary from species to species. Orang-utangs are monogamous, bonobos are promiscuous, but within the tribe, and gorillas have harems. None of these "scatter their seed far and wide." Wolves are semi-monogamous. It's not an unusual social structure.

Even the men who "get a little on the side" stay with their wives, for the most part. They may like sexual excitement with a stranger, but they don't spread their resources far and wide. If the stranger shows up pregnant, he would say he never saw her before. Meanwhile, he is coaching Jr.'s soccer team and paying for the younger daughter's orthodontia and the older daughter's wedding.
