Study: Set-top boxes to
become Web force

Five million digital set-top boxes are
expected to placed into U.S. homes by
2002, but only 20% of the Web's leading
electronic commerce vendors are prepared
to take advantage of the opportunity,
according to a study by Jupiter
Communications.

Digital set-tops will offer consumers a
selection of content, aggregators and
merchants, forcing Web ventures and
advertisers to target a larger audience,
Jupiter said. The New York research firm
said cable operators, rather than Web
ventures, control the relationship with
set-top customers.

As both broadband access via cable
modems and interactive TV services are
expected to be in approximately 25% of all
U.S. homes by 2002, Web ventures will
have to structure revenue-sharing
partnerships with cable operators, Jupiter
said. Cable operators set to offer these
services will be the best partners for these
electronic-commerce vendors, the research
firm said.
