No doubt the US has shouldered much of the cold war costs - but do not forget that many of the allies, on a per capita basis, took a real sh*t kicking in the first and second world wars - many of the allies joined these efforts almost from day one of them being declared. In WWII almost 10% of the entire Canadian population was involved in mostly voluntary military service. On a per capita basis, Canada lost more people to WWII then any other western nation (USSR actually lost the most per capita overall). In all cases, the losses were tragic.

So - while there is some truth in what you said, you have not elucidated the entire picture.
