BGR I think you took it the wrong way. I would consider what Mike said a
compliment. To me it means that they are not wasteful.
Friend of mine who is Korean and lived here for more then 20 years
said the same thing. He said that Asians are very good in saving and
hate to through out their money. He pointed to the fact that a lot of Asian
who came here with nothing and have low paying jobs but own a home
and this is in Silicon Valley.
I got in to Asian frugality discussion with him since I could not understand why
they love to gamble, which is not frugal thing to do. His response was
"You know......"

BGR,
As a Chinese, I suspect I know what the hell I am talking about when I say we're cheap minded people. It doesn't mean we are trash or of lower quality people. Obviously, you knew that. Just because you want a brand name doesn't mean the rest of Asia gives a rat's ass about it. We are savers. When times suck, we save even more. When we have less, we eat less and save more. When times are great, we save a lot and enjoy the extra for when times suck.

How's that?
Oh, we like to gamble because you just never know, eh? We do like to gamble, but we play the odds and are rational and logical in our bets. That doesn't mean we always are correct, that's why they call it a gamble.....
