Morning Mohan:
It looks like we now begin the year all over again today with a level playing field and twice as many shares.
Not too bad a start, Dell rises 46% in Jan, is now sitting with a 26% gain so far after being stabbed in the back by Dan Niles and friends. One of the to-be-expected yearly tankings( the Spring cleaning) of the Market is finished with minimal consequences and the often predicted 10K Dow is in view.
We can expect the following to be reported:
1. Cpq vacates the No 1 spot and challenges HWP for No.3. Despite this the analysts will continue to rate cpq with more buys and strong buys then for Dell

2. Dell has locked up the 'stock of the decade' title with this last split and will be voted the 'stock of the century'
3. Dell's plan to reach 50% of sales over the internet is running ahead of schedule as a result of the alliance with IBM
4. Dells market cap exceeds $200 bil and web sales exceed $xx/day

Overall the IBM deal will provide many headlines thoughout the year, and ammunition to better keep the bears at bay
Good luck
Sig

Compaq opens Asia-Pac HQ, upbeat on Asia

Reuters Story - March 08, 1999 04:46
SINGAPORE, March 8 (Reuters) - Compaq Computer Corp opened its Asia Pacific headquarters in Singapore on Monday, confident of a quick recovery in crisis-hit Asia, a top official said.

"Asia will catch up with the high level of growth," Eckhard Pfeiffer, Compaq's President and Chief Executive Officer told reporters after the opening ceremony.

Compaq invested a total of S$3 million in the Compaq Centre and has committed to investing US$21 million in its electronic commerce, call centre activities and the Singapore engineering design centre.

The Compaq centre would house the Singapore sales and marketing operations, the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) headquarters and some Asia Pacific business units.

"We are still the world PC leader and the number one PC company in Singapore, I might add -- but we are also a global IT leader, with the enterprise and Internet capabilities necessary to meet customer needs," Pfeiffer said at the opening ceremony.

Compaq has been in Singapore since 1986 when it set up a printed circuit board facility. Asked about competition from International Business Machines Corp's and Dell Computer Corp's recent large supply deal, Pfeiffer said he had not seen "anything significant."

IBM agreed to a US$16 billion pact with Dell to manufacture key building blocks for Dell personal computers, supplying items such as disk drives, chips, network attachments and monitors.
