BANGALORE 23 MARCH

THREE more foreign companies, two from the US and one from Germany have decided to establish operations in Technopark, the electronics technology park at Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala.

The US-based firms are Toons Animation and US Technologies while Claas is from Germany. An Indian company, NIS, has also decided to take space in the campus, said K G Satheesh Kumar, chief executive officer, Technopark, here today.

In February, another US company, Square Deal Engineered Tooling and Indsoft Infotech, a company floated by a non-resident Indian had also taken space in the campus. The Bangalore-based, BFL Software has also indicated it's interest in setting up operations there.

''We might look at setting up facilities in Technopark,'' said B V Venkatesh, managing director, BFL Software. Consumer electronics major BPL is also setting up a software development centre in the campus which will start operations in June.

A team from Mahindra & Mahindra is to visit the facility in connection with its interest in becoming a joint venture partner with Technopark to develop and market it in India and abroad.

The Kerala government had recently cleared Technopark's joint venture plan, by which it seeks to offload 51 per cent of the stake to a joint venture partner, keep 26 per cent with itself in the form of land and offer the rest to a financial institution. Others who have evinced interest in being a joint venture partner include BPL, the Tatas and Larsen & Toubro.

The state budget, announced last week, will attract more investment in information technology because of the sops it offered, said K Mohandas, principal secretary, industries department, government of Kerala. Besides, three per cent of the annual budget of Rs 3,200 crore has been set aside for computerisation of various state agencies, he said.

Another information technology park is to come up at Kochi on a 100-acre plot and it is not known yet as to who will set this up. This will be under the aegis of the Kerala Industrial Infrastructure Development Corporation (Kinfra).

The revenue department of Kerala is to hand over a 100 acres of land at Kochi to HMT, which in turn has agreed to return 300 of the 400 acres of land allotted to it by the state government a decades ago. HMT will retain 100 acres, while an Indo-Italian trade and technology forum is looking at establishing its presence on one 100-acre plot, while a golf course is under consideration for the remaining 100 acres.

Technopark currently has 35 companies that have already started operations or is in the process of doing so, with a total investment of Rs 70 crore. A similar amount has also been invested by Technopark itself.
