Pete,

I grew up in the shadow of Yankee Stadium. My father worked as a stationery engineer in the neighborhood theatre. My brother had polio and was severely disabled but a rabid Yankee fan. My father's partner was an Italian immigrant. One day he told my father to have my brother come to work with him. In that dark dank basement stood Joe DiMaggio who was a friend of the family. He gave my brother a ball and his autograph. My brother remembers that moment till this day.

He was so good that he made the tough plays look easy. I saw him just briefly - but that was enough.

Re: then #6, Mickey Mantle

I believe he wore # 6 for about 2 weeks. I grew up watching The Mick.
