Mike,

Interesting. I'd like to get a copy of the report that CNBC mentioned. Anyone know which firm it was? I know it isn't Merrill Lynch, they are forecasting growth in Japan at a negative 1.6% this year and a negative 1.1% for 2000. The Merrill Lynch numbers seem to be closer to the consensus on what Japan will do.

I know most of us here are very aware of the financial and political changes that must be made for Japan to prosper long-term. But can recovery happen before these changes? I am beginning to think that they can. I can remember a few recoveries here in the U.S. that happened without the benefit of sound financial underpinnings. I doubt very much that Japan can achieve the rates of growth that don mentions, but I believe that over time Japan and the rest of Asia can build on each other. As this snowballs it could result in some very good rates of growth. What effect this will have on technology stocks, I cannot say, but I am absolutely positive I know the effect it will have on oil consumption and the oil-field service stocks that Stitch and I have been betting on recently. :-)
