Novell walks a tightrope as it transitions from survival mode to renewed growth

By Michael Moeller and Scott Berinato, PC Week

In his first 23 months on the job, Novell Inc. CEO Eric Schmidt cut more than 1,000 jobs, replaced 60 percent of upper management, killed 112 projects and brought Novell back into the black after five consecutive losing quarters.

Novell's two-year resurgence, which will be on display at the company's BrainShare user conference in Salt Lake City this month, has been nothing short of remarkable. But behind the glow of a well-crafted turnaround lie several flash points Schmidt and his management team must address before Novell (Nasdaq:NOVL) can grow significantly and win back many of the customers it has lost.
