SAN FRANCISCO (CBS.MW) -- Newsletter editor James Dines, who used to go by the moniker the "original gold bug," now calls himself the "original Internet bug." Dines' track record for small and mid-sized Internet stocks has been good. His California-based Dines Letter tells clients to buy $500 worth of each of his current "buys."

They include search engine Inktomi (INKT), which Dines recommends if the shares fall below 50, and NetGravity Inc. (NETG), the advertising services company whose shares are ailing. Dines also likes Preview Travel (PTVL), which recently saw its CEO resign. Preview Travel, which operates across the street from our own San Francisco office, is often the subject of takeover talk. Likely buyers could include any services organization or airline that wants to offer Web travel services, investment professionals in San Francisco tell me.
