MKC, yes, and things will get even dicier for them as they try to compete at higher price points with the K6-3 and K7. They simply can't afford to undercut INTC, and stay in business.

Initial pricing for this CPU is $284 for the 400Mhz, and a whopping $476 for the 450Mhz version. They are attempting to position this CPU against P3. BTW, the die size increase reduces the net die per wafer by 40% according Micprocessor Report. So by committing to building this chip, it reduces their total output.

They have gained market share and mind share, but its now time for some earnings per share. I predict INTC will own the low end before too long, and AMD will attempt to compete in the midrange, where they have enough capacity and margins to actually make some money.

And those sub $800 PCs may not be around for long. Better get one while you can <g>.
