Immigration policy is an interesting issue in that it doesn't divide people along the usually predictable left/right conservative/liberal fault lines.

I favor a pretty open door policy. I think immigrants on balance contribute much more than they cost society. Illegals are a different story. They ought to be slapped hard, sent home and never let back in.

The economy is also about as good as it gets. What happens to all these people when the economy turns down? These are all service and entry-level jobs. Look at the minority populations and teens without jobs. There's 25% unemployment in minority teens. Smacks of racism to me.

The left used to argued that the 80's jobs were all burger-flipping jobs and no manufacturing and other high-paying jobs. They used to say they could say anybody could grow the economy if the government was in deficit spending. The government's still in deficit spending and the even worse, the average person is now into deficit spending since the savings rate has dropped from 5% in the 80's to below 0. There's something of an aberration at work here. Ever hear of Y2K?

Lots of immigrants are applying for citizenship since the government changed the eligibility requirements for Medicaid, Medicare, and other assistance programs. That doesn't sound like someone who's making high wages?

I'm not against immigration. Greenspan likes the Social Security taxes they pay. The immigrants who make out the best are the highly paid who come into the US in their 40's or 50's. Their SS benefits are based on their high wages for 10-15 years of contribution and they pay much less into the system than US citizens that pay into the system for 40 or 50 years.
