From today's ROB:

Northern Telecom (NTL--TSE)
Broadcom (BRCM--Nasdaq)

$89.20, up $2.80$66.50, (U.S.) up $12.75
Broadcom, a leading U.S. cable-modem chip maker, surged 23 per cent after Northern Telecom said it will buy the Irvine, Calif.-based company's high-speed communications technology. Northern Telecom's shares were also given a lift by the news. The two tech companies collaborated to develop technology that allows phone companies to transmit voice, data and video at high speeds over phone lines. "Broadcom has a reputation for getting in early with a technology and becoming the dominant supplier," said Gregory Sheppard, an analyst with the Dataquest unit of Gartner Group Inc. Broadcom also had a boost from Wall Street: Morgan Stanley Dean Witter analyst Mark Edelstone raised his rating to "outperform" from "neutral", and NationsBanc Montgomery Securities analyst Clark Westmont initiated coverage with a "buy" rating.
