Actually, I believe that discussion of deflation/inflation are entirely relevant, if not integral, to a discussion of gold. So we're certainly not off-topic in discussing the issue.

But you are hitting on the crux of the problem with regards to increasing demand in recession strapped countries. And a bad debt write-off would likely have a short-term negative impact, with longer term positives as the slates are wiped clean.
