ComEd Prepares for Winter Weather System
CHICAGO, March 8 /PRNewswire/ -- ComEd is preparing for another winter weather system that has the potential of causing electrical service disruptions in the company's service territory.

Most of ComEd's normal daytime compliment of over 200 crews will remain on duty till at least midnight, in case they are needed for restoration duty. More than fifty crews are scheduled to report for duty at midnight to help with the restoration effort, if needed.

About 50 additional customer service representatives are scheduled to be on duty tonight and overnight at ComEd's call centers to be in a position to handle additional customer calls.

ComEd is taking these precautions because weather forecasters are predicting snow accumulations of up to ten inches. The additional crews will facilitate getting to outage locations faster through potentially snow-clogged streets. While the snow itself isn't expected to cause outages, winds in excess of 30 miles per hour coupled with wet snow that are associated with this weather system have the potential of disrupting service.

ComEd officials are proactively notifying municipal leaders about the company's preparations and opening lines of communications with these officials in advance.

With more than $7 billion in revenue in 1998, Unicom, based in Chicago and incorporated in 1994, is the parent holding company of Commonwealth Edison (ComEd). ComEd is engaged in the production, purchase, transmission, distribution and sale of electricity to wholesale and retail customers. The utility provides service to over 3.4 million customers across northern Illinois, or 70 percent of the state's population.

Unicom also is the parent holding company of Unicom Enterprises, which is an unregulated subsidiary and is engaged, through its subsidiaries, in energy service activities.
