GeoCities Members to Profit From Merchant Referral

March 8, 1999 04:42 PM
NEW YORK, March 8 (Reuters) - GeoCities Inc. GCTY on Monday said it introduced a new service that allows its 3.5 million members to take a percentage cut of any business they pass along to merchants affiliated with the online community.

"Pages That Pay," as the new program is called, connects GeoCities homesteaders to 16 major merchants, including Barnes & Noble BKS , Staples SPLS and Egghead.com EGGS .

And soon, Interiors.com INTXA (added by AM)

Previously, GeoCities members could transact business on their individual Web sites, but had to manage their dealings themselves.

With "Pages That Pay," GeoCities now offers a simple means by which its members receive a percentage fee for sales resulting from the referral of another member to a merchant site.

Company spokesman, Bruce Zanca, called "Pages That Pay" a "win, win, win" situation for GeoCities members, merchants and consumers alike.

"This is something that we think takes a really good program on the Internet and consolidates it and makes it stand together," Zanca said.

"It's a win for GeoCities because we get a fee from merchants. It's a win for marketers because they're reaching a new consumer base. And it's a win for consumers because they get to make money for sharing space on their Web site."

It's no secret that Internet commerce is growing so fast that global circuit boards may just blow a fuse. Both big name retailers and Mom-and-Pop shops are slapping up Web sites to hawk their wares left and right.

Now the 19 million monthly visitors to GeoCities online community will be able to participate in the electronic commerce craze, even if they don't necessarily have anything to sell.

For instance, someone who has a personal Web site on rock climbing in Utah can sell climbing equipment from FogDog Sports and earn a percentage of the revenue. The percentage varies with each retailer. In turn, GeoCities also takes a cut.

GeoCities, the largest online community site on the Web, allows its members to self-publish personal home pages. The more than 3.5 million members are encouraged to form links to other members based on their shared interests. The site attracts more than 19 million monthly visitors.

GeoCities shares closed at $109.625 on the Nasdaq exchange, up $7.625 from Friday's close.
