TAIPEI -- Taiwan Semiconductor Manfacturing Co. (TSM), the world's largest pure chip foundry, saw sales tumble 30% in February to NT$3.72 billion (US$1=NT$33.117) from NT$5.28 billion a year previously, the company said in a press release on Tuesday.

Accumulated sales for the first two months of the year amounted to NT$7.56 billion, down 30% from NT$10.73 billion during the same period in 1998, according to the release.

Taiwan Semiconductor said it notched up fewer working days in February due to the Lunar New Year holidays. It also noted that there was a shutdown for several days for annual equipment maintenance.

However, average selling price was up on a monthly basis, the company noted, with February sales slipping just 3.3% from January levels, according to the release.

Moreover, order volume has continued to grow in recent months, the company said, adding that capital expenditure at Taiwan Semiconductor is expected to be increased to NT$26.5 billion in 1999.

Taiwan Semiconductor's stock closed unchanged Tuesday at NT$88.00 on volume of 27.6 million shares.
