Government Seeks More Details On Lucent-Ascend Deal

ALAMEDA, Calif. (Reuters) - The Justice Department has requested additional information on
Lucent Technologies Inc. (NYSE:LU - news)'s planned $18.5 billion purchase of Ascend
Communications Inc. (Nasdaq:ASND - news), the companies said Tuesday.

The companies said that ''such a request is not unusual in these circumstances'' and they expect
the deal to close by June 30.

The acquisition of Ascend would give Lucent, the leading maker of telecommunications

of Internet traffic.

Ascend shares rose 12.5 cents to $81.44 in morning trade on the Nasdaq stock market, while
