Company Press Release
Teltrend Inc. to Develop Interoperable HDSL2 Products
ST CHARLES, Ill.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 9, 1999--Teltrend Inc. (NASDAQ: TLTN - news) today announced that it is now developing ANSI T1E1.4 compliant HDSL2 products which will be interoperable with previously announced HDSL2 products from PairGain Technologies (NASDAQ: PAIR - news), ADC Telecommunications (NASDAQ: ADCT - news), and other suppliers. To help assure the interoperability, Teltrend has selected Level One Communications, Inc. (NASDAQ: LEVL - news) as its chip supplier for HDSL2 products. Both PairGain and ADC have previously announced their use of the HDSL2 chip-set from Level One. Level One's chip-set implements the standard HDSL2 line coding called OPTIS (Overlapped Pulse-amplitude-modulation Transmission with Interlocking Spectra) which was selected by the ANSI T1E1.4 standards committee in January 1998.

''Level One has played a major role to bring vendors together and facilitate the end-to-end HDSL2 interoperability specifications as well as providing product-to-product interoperability testing in their lab. We are pleased to join the Level One HDSL2 interoperability consortium'', said Jack Parker, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Teltrend's Hi-Cap Product Business Unit. ''This is a major step forward for the telecommunications industry and represents a win-win scenario for the telecommunications equipment suppliers, HDSL2 silicon suppliers, telephone operating companies, and the end users of DS1 services. This end-to-end product compatibility will now open the door for major advances in the area of DS1 services deployment.''

''The addition of Teltrend to the growing list of industry leaders supporting HDSL2 interoperability further re-enforces HDSL2's position as a robust, spectrally compatible DSL designed specifically for business oriented voice and data applications,'' said Dan Cordingley, Director of DSL Products at silicon provider Level One Communications. ''Teltrend's market position and support of HDSL2 interoperability will directly benefit ILEC and CLEC service providers by enabling cost effective, high quality service over a single copper pair.''

Bruce Kimble, Vice President of PairGain Technologies' T1 Access Business adds, ''PairGain is committed to open, competitive product innovations for T1 Access. HDSL2 is a major opportunity to offer our customers the benefits of interoperability. We are pleased to work with Level One and Teltrend to increase the number of vendors that have achieved interoperability for their T1E1.4 compliant HDSL2 products.''

''Interoperable HDSL2 products will play an integral role in future developments in our low-cost Soneplex® T1 service delivery platform,'' said John Griffin, Vice President and General Manager for ADC's Loop Transport Division. ''We have seen success from initial Soneplex® HDSL2 shipments, validating the new HDSL2 technology and the forthcoming interoperable HDSL2 standard.''
