I do not know about iMac..

I'm not even sure about windows - I was under the impression that it was done through software at the same time using their cd writable CD-ROM .. where they not only copied the existing songs they wanted to a blank CD, but in the mp3 format..

perhaps if someone else knows for sure they can enlighten us both

A popular MP3 player on the Mac is a free/shareware called MacAMP. You don't need a CD burner for MP3 but since MP3 files can take up a lot of space if you collect a lot of songs many people record the tracks onto CDs. With 650MB per CD one can put about 150-200 songs per disc.
