That is the size of the most prevalent bid and ask. It means the bid is good for 500 shares and the ask is good for 500 shares.

Are you talking about a bid/ask size on a level I quote? If so, it's almost meaningless. It would be the number of shares (times 100..5 x 100 = 500, 10 x 100 =1000) bid or offered on the inside. The trouble with level 1 is that you can't see the depth. There could be 10 bids for 500 shares and only 1 offer of 500, or vice versa.
