Research article from ZD on chip competitors, Intel, AMD and Cyrix. Intel and AMD Continue to Battle, but Watch for Cyrix Written by Matt Sargent, Senior Industry Analyst, PCs The battle between AMD and Intel for share in the PC market has been one of the major industry stories over the last year, AMD commonly referred to as the upstart David trying to take on the dominant industry Goliath, Intel. While this battle is deserving of great attention and analysis, perhaps we should take a gander over to one of the less heralded participants in this struggle for processor market share: Cyrix. Cyrix has quietly increased its market share to 19.4% of the US retail desktop market in January. This compares to AMD and Intel's share of 36.7% and 37.1% of the US retail desktop market respectively. While Cyrix is clearly the number three player, they have made great strides by climbing from less than 1% in May of this past year to their present level. Source: StoreBoard Cyrix has managed this dramatic market share rise due to its focus within the very low end of the low cost retail market. Cyrix is betting the farm on sub $600 PCs, which have vaulted from less than 1% to 19% of the US retail desktop market in five months according to the recent InfoBead Insider entitled "Sub $1,000 Desktop Reach over 60% of Market". Cyrix is the market leader within sub $600 PCs with 71% share in January. Thus, rather than trying to take Intel on head-to-head, Cyrix has chosen to focus within a market which Intel seems to have no interest in serving. Source: StoreBoard Cyrix is clearly differentiating itself from AMD and Intel based upon price, and looking at the direction of the market place, sub $600 PCs appear to be a good place to lay the chips.
