ITU opens 3G discussions

FORTALEZA, Brazil—The International Telecommunication Union
yesterday opened up two weeks of technical discussions on equipment
standards for third-generation systems.

ITU Secretary General Yoshiko Utsumi said the organization's goal is to
achieve ‘‘maximum commonality among technologies to achieve
compatibility'' among the next generation of wireless telephone equipment.

‘‘As representatives of companies that manufacture or use the various
systems available today work toward compatibility among their systems, it
is clear that momentum is building for the ‘family of standards' approach
advocated by the United States government and BellSouth,'' said Frank
Urbany, BellSouth Corp. vice president, international.
