I agree with your comments. CF is not the only storage medium available - nor will it be the only standard in going forward.

As for the IBM microdrive, I find it very appealing for digital camera.

One reason why CF will tend to beat the microdrive for design wins is that the cost of providing a minimal amount of storage is significantly less for CF. Camera designers will generally prefer to build in a CF slot, include a relatively low capacity CF card with each camera, and let purchasers decide which higher capacity card to buy. This strategy keeps the initial purchase price down, which is going to be very important as the market gets more competitive. We could see the microdrive in cameras aimed at the professional market, but the consumer market is unlikely to adopt it widely for at least a few years.
