<<Up here in the woods, death by broken cable has been very common.>>

Same in the river bottoms. You have a winch, you carry a whole bunch of towels. No, not to clean up, cover the cable with towels to slow the whip action when it breaks. Then one day you go why am I doing the towel thing. Never have snapped a cable yet. Get to see sky, mud, sky, mud.

About as dumb as not checking the chain on your saw when cutting fire wood. When the chain comes loose on a saw you toss that hummer like a poisonous snake.

A French scientist (Lavoisier? I forget who it was) was condemned to death during the French revolution and decided to experiment with the time it took to lose conscious ability to act (not actual death, but after that, who cares?) He had a friend who stationed himself near the basket and counted the blinks. He counted eight.

Of course, a lot depends on the shock factor. A clean cut would induce less shock, allowing the victim to experience the sensation more fully. YEESH!
