At my graduation in '88 we had a french fellow speak -- he sounded this horrible cautionary note about if we didn't get our buts in gear we'd be working for the Japanese. They were supposedly taking over international finance and technology and we weren't prepared to compete. Now the same ludicrous things are being said about the US. There are cultural differences to be sure, but they in no way make us invulnerable to the coming economic slowdown. I like the odds now of predicting a real bust like we've never seen. It always happens when everybody says, "What you talkin' about? Economy's great. If things get any better I won't be able to stand it."
