Open Market Leads The Battle For Merchant Footprint in the Year of theE-Merchant
BURLINGTON, Mass., March 10 /PRNewswire/ -- In the year of the e-merchant, Open Market, Inc. (Nasdaq: OMKT), a leading provider of Internet commerce and information publishing software, today announced that it has sold more than 13,000 licenses to businesses using Open Market software and is the number-one market share leader for Internet commerce software licenses sold to businesses. Licenses include ShopSite(TM) and Transact(TM) merchant licenses and Transact and LiveCommerce(TM) enterprise licenses.
Based on Dataquest's November 1998 Digital Commerce Worldwide report entitled, "Service Providers: A Rising Electronic Commerce Software Channel Partner," Open Market is the market share leader for Internet commerce software with 8,800 licenses sold. This is more than any other vendor, including Microsoft and IBM combined. Since the publishing of the report, Open Market has sold an additional 4,200 merchant licenses, bringing the total to 13,000 licenses sold, with over 6,500 merchants in-production.
Recently, Open Market and Lycos announced that they have entered into a revenue-sharing agreement to integrate the power of Open Market's software solutions into Lycos' burgeoning e-commerce infrastructure. This relationship will result in linking millions of shoppers with thousands of vendors and is intended to further solidify Open Market's leadership position with the rapidly growing merchant community.
According to a Keenan Vision study, the number of e-merchants will balloon from 17,500 in 1998 to more than 400,000 by the end of 2003. Vernon Keenan, Internet analyst and founder of Keenan Vision Inc. said, "E-merchants are understanding the tremendous opportunity of selling online. It's now easier than ever before and competitive pressures are accelerating. Open Market's products are the right kind of tools and Open Market is well positioned to remain a major player in the battle for footprint."
Open Market's president and CEO, Gary Eichhorn, said, "Today's battleground is for the merchant and Open Market is leading the merchant wars. With our easy-to-use store creation product, ShopSite, in combination with our best-in-class commerce application, Transact, the Open Market solution represents the best of all worlds."
Open Market's service provider partners continue to expand its reach around the globe. With more than 80 ISPs providing store-building services using Open Market's ShopSite and more than 50 Commerce Service Providers (CSPs) providing transaction processing services based on Open Market's Transact, Open Market has now sold more than 13,000 licenses to enable merchants to build online stores and take orders over the Internet.
Open Market has dominated the Commerce Service Provider market by establishing a worldwide infrastructure of telecommunications providers, banks, Internet Service Providers, portals, and other companies that provide commerce and store-building services to merchants on an outsource basis. Some of these include AT&T, Barclays Bank, First Union National Bank, France Telecom, Hiway, Lycos, Netcom, NTT, Sage Networks, SBC Communications, Swiss PTT, Telecom Italia, and Telstra.
According to Jeff Bussgang, vice president of marketing for Open Market, "For most small and medium sized companies, it makes sense to outsource the complexity of Internet commerce _- store creation, security, credit card authorization, order processing, tax and shipping calculation, fulfillment _ to a trusted third party. Open Market's CSP's and ISP's are emerging as the most popular enablers of Internet commerce."
