Borders Group Earnings -4: Year Gross Margin 28.3% Vs 27.9%

Borders Group opened 47 Borders stores during the year, increasing the total to 250. Same-store sales for the Borders chain rose 1.7% for the fourth quarter and 3.5% for the year.

Waldenbooks same-store sales were flat for the quarter and fell 1% for the year.

The number of Waldenbooks stores decreased to 900 from 923 during the year.

The company plans to open about 50 stores in 1999.

Gross margins for the year rose to 28.3% of sales from 27.9% in 1997.
