All this talk about NDSv8 is really great. Here's an article that actually points to where to go and DOWNLOAD the beta software TODAY.

Novell already has NDS while others DON'T and instead of sitting on their "lead", they are improving their product. Perhaps it's a peek into the mindset of Novell engineering.

Now, if we could only jumpstart their marketing people...too bad they don't hire MSFT's marketing gurus.... :)

Novell announces NetWare 5 NFS
By ELINOR MILLS
IDG News Service, 03/09/99

Novell yesterday announced the availability of NetWare 5 Network File System (NFS) Services, as well as the opening of beta testing for Novell Directory Services (NDS) Version 8.

NetWare 5 NFS Services are designed to provide smooth connectivity between NetWare 5 servers and Unix-based systems, Novell said in a statement. The latest version includes enhanced security and administration from a single point; allows users with WebNFS-enabled browsers to access files on the NetWare 5 server over the Internet or intranet; and supports Novell Storage Services (NSS) volumes.

NetWare 5 NFS Services are available immediately in the U.S. and Europe for $2,995 per server license. Customers already using a previous version of NetWare NFS can upgrade for $1,440 per server license, Novell said.

Meanwhile, a license to use the NDS Version 8 beta is available today free of charge. Existing NetWare 5 customers may download NDS Version 8 from Novell's Web site at support.novell.com.

Novell also announced updates to its PartnerNet program for resellers. The revised program, PartnerNet99, aims to give resellers improved sales and technical education along with tools to drive adoption of NetWare 5 and NDS software, the company said in a statement.

Here's a another news worthy piece...

___Compaq, IBM, Novell, Oracle Invest In Red Hat___
Compaq, IBM, Novell, and Oracle yesterday disclosed equity
investments in Red Hat Software Inc., the largest distributor
of the Linux operating system. Financial terms were not
disclosed, though all are minority positions.

The investments are noteworthy in that they are the latest
vote of support for Linux, the open source operating system
that's competing with Windows NT and Unix as a server
operating system. A slew of companies announced partnerships
and plans to support Linux at last week's LinuxWorld
conference in San Jose, Calif., which drew 12,000 attendees.

Paul McNamara, VP of business development for Red Hat, said
its customers view directories, database applications, and
platform integration for Linux as important if they're going
to deploy Linux more broadly. "We chose these partners
because they are leaders in these areas," McNamara said.
Prior to yesterday's equity investment announcements, Intel
and Netscape Communications also invested in Red Hat, as have
venture capital firms Greylock and Benchmark Partners.

One more and I promise, no more news....

NOVELL LAYS OUT ROADMAP
Novell revs its product engines in advance of developers conference.
zdnn.com

Please note that the 64-bit NetWare is very important here considering only UNIX can perform at that level in some instances. This is brings more to the table in terms of horsepower, scalability and performance than most competing NOS's.

More proof that Novell is not resting on the turnaround success but moving full steam ahead.
