I think there is a consensus that small players get squeezed out. Balance sheets of these companies do show decent top of the line growth.

You are missing a major point!
You may have a point if those were the only players in the market.
Remember that white box makers own around 40% of the market as of the end of '98.
So some companies may be losing market share to those big boys!

Good question. I suspect that the answer is that we are talking about apples and oranges.

For example, in DELL's last quarter, servers and notebooks accounted for 37% of sales, yet they don't count in PC sales. When Dell mentions its overall growth, it is talking about all revenues.

Ramsey, Since those 3 cos together only account for about 30% of PC sales, it is possible for all to be telling some version of the truth.
