Its good you post this, but this is common sense. I never give out anything over the phone if I haven't initiated the call. And when people call me with deals, I ask they send it to me in writing. That filters out most of the junk calls I get.

The worst one I got recently was from a phone sales operation trying to sell me a sticker for my car that would show I support the county sherrif. When I called the sheriffs office the next day I found out after lots of calls the county was only getting 40% of the fee. They wanted me to pay $32. The county would have gotten about $13, the caller got the rest. What a scam. The phone caller kept calling us back trying to get us to pay, but I just told him to go call some other sucker. Our taxes are already very high where I am living now.

Now if I could auto-magically detect it was a junk call. There is one trick I've used and it seems to be decent. Let your phone ring 5-6 times. If its a phone sales operation, they operate by calling several numbers at once. The person who picks up first gets the priviledge of listening to the pitch. The rest of the people pick up and get a dead line.
