Ericsson To Expand China Operations

insidechina.com

STOCKHOLM, Mar. 10, 1999 -- (Agence
France Presse) Swedish telecommunications
giant Ericsson plans to expand its operations in
China by 10-15 percent and employ some 500
people despite tough competition from Japanese
and other rivals, the Swedish business newspaper
Dagens Industri reported Tuesday.

"It will be a tough year in terms of competition,
but a good year in terms of market growth," John
Gilbertson, former head of Ericsson's China
operations, told the paper.

Some 15 to 17 million new network phone lines
as well as 15 million new mobile phone
subscribers were forecast to be connected in
China this year.
Ericsson said it wants to be in the
fight over the "larger pie" along with Japanese
firms, Siemens of Germany and France's Alcatel.

China is also the single biggest market for Ericsson's main competitor,
Nokia. Ericsson plans to retain its market share -- 30 percent for mobile
phones and 46 percent for infrastructure -- and generate sales of an
estimated 23 billion kronor ($2.9 billion). (US$1 = 8.2791 yuan,
HK$7.7490, T$33.1600 and 0.9195 Euro) ( (c) 1999 Agence France
